Criteria Summary We are highlighting sustainable development, or ‘Planet, People and Profits’ in the awards. By this, we mean that we want to raise the importance of helping to build better businesses for the future, by raising awareness of the value of setting a vision for the future and establishing operating principles to guide the running of the company. This may involve considering ways to balance work and home life, setting up good employment and health and safety policies or looking at the efficient use of energy and resources. This might also mean looking at customer and supplier needs or other activities, which takes into consideration the impact of the business on its surroundings and helps secure a sustainable future. LiveWIRE, along with Shell, believes that sustainable development should be a way of life, not a concept.
The ‘People, Planet, Profits’ element of the guidelines are intended to check, and in some cases raise, awareness of sustainable development among young people setting up in business or in the early stages of their business ventures. To some it will be new ground and to others it will be a way of spreading good practice and new ideas. Where appropriate we would encourage the giving of special awards to those who have shown creativity and initiative in the following areas:
good employment policy; potential for employment; energy efficiency in the workplace; recyclability of waste or by-products.
