Criteria Summary Nations in Bloom covers five population categories. Communities are not compared against each other within their population category but are judged as to how they are performing in respect of the judging criteria within the cultural, political, economic, geographic and climatic environment in which they are situated. Enhancement of the built and natural Landscape - This section should demonstate how the landscape in your community has been enhanced to create environments that generate civic pride, facilitate enjoyable recreational experiences and improve the quality of life within your community. This includes the use and enhancement of both hard and soft landscape, planting and other forms of beautification that improve the design of the landscape. Heritage Management - should demonstrate how your community values, preserves and manages, for the benefit of the community, its cultural and built heritage. Environmentally Sensitive Practices - This section should demonstrate how your community has adopted environmentally sensitive practices and pursues initiatives that result in sustainable management of the environment. This would include enhancing the quality of air, land and water and reducing the consumption of natural resources. Community Involvement - This section should demonstrate the extent of community involvement, in the context of its cultural environment in the practical maintenance, management and planning of aspects of the local environment. This includes the business sector, individual volunteers and the community as a whole. Planning for the Future - This section should demonstrate your community's use of sensitive and creative planning techniques for the creation of longer term, sustainable, liveable communities.

Other Info Nations in Bloom was launched in 1997 and is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme and is the world’s only Awards Competition focusing on Best Practice in the management of the local environment. Communities from over 50 countries and many different cultures have participated in Nations in Bloom and each year the number of communities and countries represented has increased. Each year communities that have met at the Finals of Nations in Bloom have formed partnerships to exchange Best Practice and practical experiences, and in many cases have arranged exchange visits to address mutual challenges. These partnerships have inevitably led to mutual technical advances and more effective use of resources, including finance. Nations in Bloom is more than a competition. In addition to providing the only stage on which international Best Practice can be observed, the Competition has reflected identified and led International Best Practice. The creation of liveable communities has, from the outset, been an objective of Nations in Bloom, and this aspiration is increasingly featured in the Nations in Bloom Presentations. The creation of a liveable community is increasingly an objective of communities in almost every country and culture. To reflect this development, the Competition will be renamed The International Awards for Liveable Communities, The LivCom Awards, with effect from 2004. The 2003 award ceremony was held in Aperdourn, Netherlands and 2004 will be held in Niagara, Canada.
